Vitenparken

Join a park walk in the NMBU park + lunch buffet – Sold out

Most people know the Botanical Garden in Oslo. Fewer know that just 30 minutes away, in Ås, there is a park that can rival the country's most famous green spaces in size, diversity and history. The NMBU Park is a living plant collection, a hidden botanical treasure – and a professional powerhouse for Norwegian garden culture.

The park belongs to the Norwegian University of Life Sciences (NMBU) – home to Norway’s leading academic community in plant science and landscape architecture. The area is not just a research and teaching arena, but a carefully composed whole: beautifully curated and maintained year-round, with flowers and colors that change with the seasons. A landscape that alternates between the picturesque and the academic – with features reminiscent of English gardens and visual associations with series such as Bridgerton and Downton Abbey .

Saturday, July 5th invites Vitenparken for a guided park walk led by landscape manager Filip Ihrsen. This tour takes you among flowers, perennials and shrubs of all colors and shapes – a journey in both plant splendor and botanical knowledge.

Here you can experience the rosary from 1965, a classic rose bed with historical varieties in a harmonious structure. You will see the colorful perennial fields with over 400 different species and varieties, carefully arranged for variety, color and educational value. You will learn about plant selection, pollinator-friendly species, care strategies and the garden's role as a living textbook for both students and researchers.

The NMBU park is today home to over 1,100 species of shrubs and trees and has been a scientific laboratory since it was planned by landscape architect Olaf Leif Moen in 1924. It was designed to support teaching at the university's landscape architecture and plant science program – and is today one of Norway's most extensive and active plant collections.

After the tour, you are invited to a lunch buffet at Andedammen Café, where dishes are served with the best seasonal ingredients – often grown right nearby.
