A living cultural monument – and one of Norway's most beautiful university parks.
Join us on an atmospheric summer tour through over 160 years of history at Campus Ås. With Tove Blytt Holmen as your guide, you will hear about the architecture, landscape and people who have shaped the place since the late 19th century.
NMBU's campus dates back to 1859 and acquired its characteristic appearance between 1897 and 1902, when architect Ole Sverre designed several of the most iconic buildings in the neo-Renaissance style. The Urbygningen, Tårnbygningen, Circus and Tivoli form a unique campus axis that is still the heart of Ås – surrounded by open parks, old avenues and detailed brick facades. The area bears witness to a time when higher education in agriculture, horticulture and forestry was promoted as national projects, and where architecture was supposed to reflect both academic weight and aesthetic dignity. Today, several of the buildings are listed and are considered some of Norway's most important university buildings.
The campus park is home to over 800 varieties of shrubs and trees, a rich perennial field and a rosarium from the 1960s – all planned according to the principles of landscape architect Olav Moen. The botanical richness and the deliberate lines of the landscape provide a sensory and historical experience, right in the heart of Ås.
The tour is organized by Vitenparken Campus Ås, a national science center for sustainability, environment and technology. After the tour, we gather for a delicious lunch buffet from Andedammen Café and Restaurant, which serves food made with fresh, seasonal ingredients and vegetables from the Science Park's own garden.
Suitable for anyone who appreciates architecture, landscape, history and a summer day outside the city – or is new to Campus Ås.
