The forest – more than just trees: Vitenparken develops teaching plans

In the spring of 2023, WWF, Nature and Youth, the Norwegian Association for the Conservation of Nature and Sabima received support from Sparebankstiftelsen DNB for a new project. Over a three-year period, we will collaborate to spread forest joy, engagement and knowledge about forests through the project The Forest – More Than Just Trees.

As part of the project, the Vitenparken to strengthen knowledge about the role of forests and inspire conservation of biodiversity in Norwegian forests, through the development of a teaching offer. The goal is to offer teachers a pedagogical tool that is easy to implement, flexible in use and does not require advanced or expensive equipment. The program is adapted for upper secondary school students, with the possibility of adjustment to the last year of secondary school. The offer functions as a campaign that will help increase young people's engagement and awareness of the value of forests - because forests are so much more than just trees.

The teaching program is designed to arouse engagement and understanding of the role of forests, with particular focus on:

– The forest is full of life – more than just trees
– Natural forest vs. production forest – what is the difference?
– Forests as carbon storage and key to sustainability
– Forests and health – an arena for both physical and mental well-being

Vitenparken is grateful to have been invited into the project to develop educational offerings that convey this important message. We hope the offerings will make the forest more interesting and accessible to young people, and that they will appreciate its importance – not only as an ecosystem, but as a source of life, learning and inspiration.
