Sow and plant outdoors
Wait to plant until the danger of night frost is over. Check with parents who grow crops if you don't know when that is. In the Oslo area, it is considered safe after May 17th.
Many plants are sown directly into the soil where they will grow. It is most common to sow in rows, but here the only limits are your imagination.
Read the back of the seed bag to find out:
- when to sow the seeds
- how deep they should be sown
- distance to next plant
To help spread the seeds, you can fold a sheet of paper and place the seeds in the fold. Shake the sheet to release small portions of seeds.
Plants that have been indoors their entire lives are delicate and need to be hardened off before planting. Place the plants outside in the shade for at least 3-4 days before planting them. This will make them tougher and more tolerant of sun and wind. Do not leave them in the shade for longer than two weeks. Water the plants well before planting. Make sure they are really wet. Now the rule that they should not be soaking wet does not apply. It can be difficult to see how wet they are. Take some of the pots out to take a good look. Dry soil has poor absorption capacity, so to get them soaked you have to water everything, wait a while and water again at least twice, preferably three times.
