Life and work at agricultural vocational schools

How were students recruited to agricultural schools in the 1950s? With the backdrop of "Knowledge your strength - makes your profession easier", you can join a film evening with the Friends of the Science Park and Vitenparken about life and work at agricultural vocational schools in Oppland in 1951.

Film for recruitment

This is a film that was produced with support from agricultural organizations in Oppland County to create greater understanding of the importance of vocational schools for the vocational training of rural youth. The film was primarily intended to inspire increased education. But according to the film's description, it was to be more than a propaganda film for education and knowledge. It was also to provide a good and comprehensive picture of Oppland's "beautiful and changing nature" and provide knowledge and insight into life and work at the vocational schools in Oppland County. Here, vivid images, good commentary and a conscious use of music were to present Oppland County in a good way and inspire young people to work in the spirit of Isak Sellanrå! The message was clear: Knowledge is your strength - it makes your job easier!

Experts comment

At the film evening, our two well-known members, Arne Ellingsberg and Kristian Kaus, will comment on the film and put it in context with the past and present. They were born and raised in Ringebu and both attended Storhove Agricultural School during the period the film was shot. Kristian Kaus is one of those featured in the film as a research agronomist at Storhove Agricultural School in 1951. They both started their vocational education at Storhove before later studying at the Norwegian University of Agricultural Sciences.

The first part of the film evening shows a presentation of Oppland County and the agricultural schools at Storhove near Lillehammer, Valle at Østre Toten, Klones in Vågå and Valdres near Leira south of Fagernes.

The housewives of Gjøvik

In the second part of the film evening, we show the presentation of Bondelia Housewife School in Gjøvik, Hjerleidske Handicraft School in Dovre and Oppland Forestry School in Brandbu. All of these schools – including the housewife schools in the villages – were in 1951 part of the agricultural vocational schools administratively subordinate to the Ministry of Agriculture.

The film also gives a good picture of the interaction between the Norwegian School of Agricultural Sciences (NLH) and the agricultural vocational schools in Oppland. Three well-known directors at NLH, Theodor Koller, Johan L. Hirsch and Nils Ødegård have a clear place in the film. At Brandbu we see Professor Ivar Samset as an active participant in the demonstrations.

Political and official Norway in the post-war period is represented by Director of Agriculture Gulbrandsen in the Ministry of Agriculture, County Governor Gabrielsen in Oppland and Minister of Agriculture Thorstein Treholt, in the film at the beginning of his career as principal of Valdres Agricultural School.

The film's photographer is Paul Berge, one of the pioneers of Norwegian cinematography, born and raised in Fåvang in Gudbrandsdalen. The commentary is by the well-known radio voice Hartvig Kiran – this time in Bokmål costume. The music and atmosphere in the film are influenced by the head of the Agricultural Film and Picture Office – Lars Grimelund Kjeldsen.
