Greenhouse and kitchen garden

Action before words. On Vitenparken we don't just talk about food – we produce it too. In the kitchen garden and greenhouse we grow vegetables and herbs for Vitenparken Café. Food waste from the café is composted and returned to the topsoil in the kitchen garden.

100 varieties of seeds and a robot

We at Vitenparken operates a greenhouse located at the Center for Climate-Controlled Plant Research, NMBU. Outside the large greenhouse, we have started a kitchen garden where we produce vegetables for Vitenparken Café. The kitchen garden was started in the spring of 2017, and we have everything from red kale, purple carrots, pink beans, blue potatoes and colorful corn.

In the kitchen garden we are inspired by different growing methods. We practice crop rotation, where we rotate which crops are grown on the same plot of land, we cover the soil with straw to conserve moisture, we grow legumes that fix nitrogen in the soil and we explore different composting methods. Inside the greenhouse we have a FarmBot. This is a robot that we program to sow, water and weed – and it is completely precise. Here you can experience how technology and food production are intertwined.

For school classes and the public

The kitchen garden and greenhouse are used for teaching to school classes, for guided tours for groups, and not least for activities and events for the public under the auspices of Vitenparken Here, pupils, students and families with children can learn more about food production, plant health, technology and robots.
