Exhibition opening: Thursday 27 April. at 3 p.m
Social? Or: Thinking Like an Insect? is a series of three large drawings, created by associate professor, art therapist and educator Knut Omholt, in which he explores how many individuals in a community can form formations from chaos to order.
Both honeybees and bumblebees enjoy being together in large groups. Omholt is inspired by biologists' studies of how so-called social animals can produce patterns by the way they position themselves in relation to each other, and his drawings can be seen as snapshots of such individuals' placements.
How do these kinds of spontaneous arrangements come about? And what does it really mean to be 'social'?
For Omholt, the criteria are unclear, yet he asks us, is it true that most people want to be social? Positioning themselves in the social field is an important part of life. But does human positioning have any aesthetic dimension? If so, what would that dimension entail in terms of changes in the guidelines that are inherent in being social? Could we learn from animals – from insects, for example – should we think more like an insect?
The exhibition is open every day from Thursday, April 27 – May 21, 2023.
Welcome!
