Genetic variation provides opportunities for the future. It is not necessarily the characteristics that are bred for today that are desirable tomorrow. Cultivation conditions and climate change and we therefore need a large variety of genes that give us the opportunity to develop breeds and varieties that are robust under new conditions. It may also be desirable to breed varieties that, for example, provide better nutritional composition, resistance to plant diseases or that are suitable for product development. Therefore, it is important to maintain a diversity of varieties, in this way we also maintain a diversity of genes and characteristics (source: NIBIO and NORSØK).
