Post 8: Biodiversity Dilemma

When we grow crops, we can choose to have a lot of just one plant in a large area ( monoculture), or a variety of different plants together ( polyculture). They both have their advantages and disadvantages. How do you rate it ?

Monoculture and polyculture

Monocultures obviously have their advantages, which is why they are used so much. Among other things, it is easier and faster to both sow and harvest large areas when they only contain one type of plant. This makes large-scale farming possible. At the same time, they are more susceptible to diseases and pests, so they are often sprayed heavily. The pesticides can seep into the ground and contaminate groundwater. In addition, all the plants take up the same nutrients, which affects how they are fertilized, soil structure and life in the soil. The problem increases the more years you have with the same crop.

The advantage of polycultures is that they can utilize the area and the food more efficiently, and there may be fewer problems with pests. At the same time, they are much more labor-intensive to grow and harvest.
